Account Growth · 8 min read
Compounding is one of the most powerful forces in investing — letting returns generate further returns over time. In EA trading, compounding means periodically increasing lot sizes as the account grows, so that the same strategy generates more profit in dollar terms without changing the percentage risk profile.
Done correctly, this is how a $2,000 account becomes $10,000 over several years without ever increasing the percentage risk taken per dollar. Done incorrectly — increasing lots too aggressively — it amplifies drawdown at the worst possible time.
The Core Rule: Lot Size Should Scale with Account Balance
If 0.01 lots is the correct sizing for a $2,000 account, then 0.02 lots is the correct sizing for a $4,000 account, 0.03 lots for $6,000, and so on. The ratio of lot size to account balance should remain constant — this maintains the same percentage risk profile as the account grows.
The mistake is increasing lot size based on a winning period rather than account balance growth. An account at $2,000 that had a great month does not justify moving to 0.02 lots — it is still a $2,000 account. Wait until the balance reaches $4,000 before increasing to 0.02.
The Compounding Milestone Framework
When to Adjust Lot Size
Only increase lot size when three conditions are met:
- The account balance (not equity — equity includes open floating losses) has reached the next milestone
- There are no open recovery cycles at the time of the change — lot size changes mid-cycle complicate the math
- The market environment appears stable — avoid lot size increases right before major central bank decisions or known high-volatility periods
After a Kill Switch Trigger: Reducing Lot Size
If the kill switch triggers and the account drops significantly, reduce lot size proportionally with the new balance before restarting. Do not restart at the same lot size on a reduced account — the risk profile has changed. Recalibrate to the new balance before resuming.
Example: Account starts at $3,000 with 0.01 lots. Kill switch triggers, balance drops to $1,050. Restart at $1,000 equivalent sizing: 0.01 lots is the correct level again. Do not restart at 0.03 lots because “that’s what you were running before.”
